The Southern Region 4-H2O Ambassador Program is currently being piloted in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. In Kentucky, one pilot location is Russell Cave Elementary in Fayette County, where many of the students live in the Cane Run Watershed. The Southern Region 4-H2O Ambassador Program addresses key concepts related to watershed education. This multistate program is part of an ongoing effort within the Southern Region to educate and empower youth to conserve and protect our water resources.
As ambassadors, youth are required to develop and implement a community-based service project. After an ambassador has completed a service project, he/she will showcase their efforts at a state level event. As a Southern Region 4-H2O Ambassador, youth will be required to mentor new participants entering the program in following years. In September, 2009, all Russell Cave Elementary 5th graders attended a 2-day, 1-night 4-H2O Camp and used Cane Run as a case study. The students learned about watersheds, stormwater pollutants and watershed stewardship. Currently, the class is planning a community service project to implement in the Cane Run Watershed.
More recently, the Russell Cave Elementary 5th graders participated in a clean-up event along Cane Run. To learn more about what they found, click here.
